Cookies are small text files containing information that are stored on your computer or device by your web browser when you visit a website. Cookies may be created by the website the user is visiting (‘first party cookies’), or may be set by websites other than the one the user is currently visiting (‘third party cookies’).

Cookies are widely used to allow a website to recognise a user’s device, preferences and generally improve the efficiency of a website, as well as observing behaviour and compiling aggregate statistics. A common example is an authentication cookie which confirms whether the user is logged in to an account.

Cookies that are erased at the end of your browsing session are known as ‘session cookies’. Other cookies compile longer-term information about a user and their browsing history and will remain on your computer until you erase them or they are erased by your browser at the end of their expiry date (‘persistent cookies’).
